• The Currin Covered Bridge is the only bridge in Oregon painted with two colors
• Lane County built the bridge using county resources saving taxpayers a third of the initial proposed cost
Currin Covered Bridge, or simply Currin Bridge, is a historic 105 feet (32 m) long Howe truss bridge over Row River in Cottage Grove. The bridge carries Layng Road and is open to pedestrians only.
This is one of seven covered bridges located in the immediate area and like many bridges, was named after an early pioneer family.
The Currin Covered Bridge was constructed in 1925 to replace an older one built in 1883.
Lane County officials decided to build the bridge using county resources instead of accepting the lowest bid of $6,250 ($109,000 today) to save taxpayers money. They managed to construct the bridge for $4,205 ($73,000 today), saving taxpayers a third of the initial proposed cost.
This bridge has red sides and white portals making it the only bridge in Oregon painted with two colors. Other notable architectural features include hand-hewn chords, a corrugated metal roof, and crosswise planking on the approach.
A new concrete bridge nearby, which was completed in 1979, took over the vehicle traffic. Since the time, the Currin Bridge was closed for cars but pedestrians can still access it.
The bridge underwent fumigation for insects and structural repair in 1987. Lane County did a series of restorations with a $48,000 grant through the Oregon Covered Bridge Program of 1993-1995.
Repairs included a new roof, truss repairs, siding reconstruction, a new rail system, and painting.
The Currin Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
