• Kissing Rock at South Beach is a part of the annual treasure hunt festival
South Beach is a stunning blend of sand and pebbles located on the Southern Oregon Coast, easily accessible from Highway 101 in the charming seaside city of Gold Beach. This area, including Gold Beach and its surroundings, offers a perfect retreat with a wide range of activities such as beachcombing, fishing, surfing, tidepool exploration, and more.
Stretching 5 miles from the South Jetty of the Rogue River to Cape Sebastian, South Beach—sometimes referred to as Hunter Creek Beach—provides a picturesque coastal experience. Hunter Creek meets the ocean near Kissing Rock.
Kissing Rock is the most prominent landmark of South Beach. This impressive sea stack rises dramatically above the beach and highway, surrounded by smaller rocks. While there are various stories about the origin of its name, the most popular tale is that it was a romantic meeting spot for couples.
The South Beach is a part of the annual festival similar to the Finders Keepers Glass Floats Event in Lincoln City. From early February to the end of April, the three miles of the beach from the South Jetty to just beyond Kissing Rock become a hunting ground for beautiful glass floats. These handcrafted orbs are hidden above the surf line in the grass or among driftwood. You’re allowed to keep one glass float per person. If you find a tagged float, visit the South Beach Visitor’s Center for a chance to win a prize.
Beyond glass floats, South Beach is a paradise for beachcombers and rock hounds. Collectible rocks and minerals such as jasper, agate, petrified wood, and various fossils can be found. The beach is also a popular spot for surfers and anglers. Anglers flock here for the late summer and fall salmon runs, while surf fishing is available year-round.
Access Points: South Beach can be reached from several access points: the South Jetty, the Gold Beach Visitor’s Center, and the Kissing Rock pullout at Hunter Creek Bridge.
Otter Point State Recreation Site, Agate and Bailey Beaches are sitting just a short drive away from this spot.
