• Boulder Creek Campground is one of the few primitive campgrounds along the South Umpqua River
Boulder Creek Campground sits in a quiet corner of the Umpqua National Forest, about 14 miles northeast of Tiller along the South Umpqua River.
This small, rustic campground rests on the banks of the South Umpqua River, right where Boulder Creek flows into the main channel. A mixed lush forest of tall conifers surrounds the sites, providing generous shade even on the warmest summer days. The gentle sound of the river drifts through the trees, creating a calming atmosphere.
With only seven campsites, Boulder Creek stays uncrowded and peaceful throughout the season. If you want a simple outdoor escape away from busy campgrounds and noisy crowds, this hidden gem delivers.
No fishing is allowed at this section of the river. If you want to cast a line, head upstream or downstream to other designated fishing areas along the South Umpqua.
Boulder Creek Campground - Things to Do
Swimming and Wading
The campground gives direct access to the South Umpqua River. The beach area is rocky and pebbly rather than sandy, so bring river shoes. Here you will find both shallow spots for wading and deeper areas for cooling off on hot days.
If you are not planning to camp overnight, take the right spur road near the entrance, which leads directly to the riverbank.
The South Umpqua River corridor has many other spots for summer fun in its warm waters.

South Umpqua River Rockhounding
The South Umpqua River is a popular destination for rockhounding. Agates, jasper, and pieces of petrified wood are the most common finds here.
Exploring South Umpqua Falls
South Umpqua Falls sits about 7 miles downstream from the campground.
This waterfall has a fish ladder built along its edge. During salmon and steelhead migration season, you can watch these determined fish leap and fight their way upstream. A viewing platform provides a safe spot to observe the action up close.
The falls also include natural rock formations and pools worth exploring.

Boulder Creek Campground Stay
Boulder Creek Campground has 7 campsites suitable for tents or RVs up to 22 feet long. Each site includes a picnic table and fire pit. Two vault toilets serve the campground, along with garbage disposal bins for convenient waste management.
Drinking water is available from a hand pump spigot, which sets Boulder Creek apart from many other primitive Forest Service campgrounds in the area. However, there are no showers, electrical hookups, or dump stations. Campers should bring all other supplies they need for their stay.
The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
Sites cost $10 per night, with an additional $5 per night for each extra vehicle. The season typically runs from May through October, depending on weather and road conditions.
Leashed pets are welcome at all campsites. Some facilities offer wheelchair accessibility for visitors with mobility needs.
