• Prehistoric Gardens features 23 life-size prehistoric sculptures from the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras

Prehistoric Gardens is a truly unique roadside attraction in Port Orford. Established in 1955, this temperate rainforest garden features 23 life-size prehistoric animal sculptures from the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras.

It is a fascinating attraction for all ages, showcasing the natural history and unique species that once traversed our planet by water, air, and on the ground.

When you arrive here, you will be greeted by a 50-foot-long Tyrannosaurus rex and an impressive 85-foot-long Brachiosaurus.

The self-guided walk winds through lush rainforest trails within a 33-acre garden. Along the way, you’ll encounter Archelon—the largest turtle ever discovered—Ichthyosaur, a massive marine reptile, Pteranodon, one of the largest flying reptiles, and many more. Each sculpture is built to scale, anatomically accurate, and includes hand-painted educational signage.

The garden is pet-friendly; leashed dogs are welcome at no extra charge. Be sure to stop by the gift shop for dinosaur-themed souvenirs, agates, and fossils. The pathways are wheelchair- and stroller-accessible.

Prehistoric Gardens History

Ernie “E.V.” Nelson had a lifelong passion for natural history, especially dinosaurs. A talented artist, he was once invited to work as a cartoonist for Walt Disney Studios, but instead became an accountant during the Great Depression to support his family.

In 1953, Nelson and his wife sold their accounting business and family home in Eugene and purchased 77 acres on the southern Oregon coast to pursue his childhood dream. To ensure scientific accuracy, Nelson spent three years researching prehistoric anatomy, traveling across the U.S. to study museum collections and consult with paleontologists.

The first five sculptures were created over two years, and it took a total of 30 years to complete all 23 figures. Nelson operated the Prehistoric Gardens until his death in 1999 at the age of 91. Today, his granddaughter, Kiki McGrath, runs the park, keeping Nelson’s dream alive and helping visitors learn about the unique natural history of our planet.

Prehistoric Gardens is open year-round: 10 a.m.–5 p.m. in spring and fall, 9 a.m.–6 p.m. in summer; call ahead for winter hours.
