• Walton Lake is a small high-elevation lake in Ochoco National Forest
Walton Lake is a small, peaceful mountain lake tucked inside the Ochoco National Forest, about 30 miles east of Prineville, Oregon. This scenic lake sits at around 5,200 feet above sea level, surrounded by tall ponderosa pines and fir trees.
Even though the lake is small, it's packed with things to do. Walton Lake is a relaxing place to spend a day fishing, hiking, picnicking, or just watching wildlife.
From mid-May to mid-October, you can drive right up to the lake. Outside of that, the road is usually closed due to snow. During the off-season, vehicle access is blocked at the entrance gate. You can still hike in if you're up for it!

Outdoor Activities at Walton Lake
This lake may be small, but it's beautiful and has everything you need for a chill day in the forest.
Water Sports
The lake has plenty of space to enjoy various water activities, including paddleboarding, kayaking, and other sports. However, the water in the lake is considered too cold for comfortable swimming.
Fishing
Fishing here is likely the most popular thing to do. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout, and the calm water makes it easy for beginners and kids. You can fish from: the shore, the dock, and a small non-motorized boat or float tube.
Hiking and Nature Walks
You'll love the 1-mile barrier-free loop trail that circles the lake. It's flat, scenic, and perfect for all ages and abilities.
Along the way, you might spot squirrels darting across the trail, deer grazing by the water, and colorful birds like yellow-headed blackbirds and kingfishers.
Want a longer hike? Try the Round Mountain Trail, which is about 7.5 miles. It's great for hiking and mountain biking.

Walton Lake in Winter
Ever tried snowshoeing in a quiet forest? Walton Lake turns into a quiet, snowy fairytale in winter. The road is usually closed, so you'll need to hike or snowshoe in.
Winter activities include snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and winter wildlife photography.
Just remember, there are no services in winter. Pack smart and dress warmly.
