Cape Lookout State Park sits on the Northern Oregon Coast, just 8 miles south of Oceanside, and it a fantastic destination for outdoor enthusiasts. This beautiful park offers scenic Pacific Ocean vistas and excellent opportunities for camping, beachcombing, and hiking, with access to two beaches that can easily fill an entire day with adventure.

The cape itself is a striking volcanic headland that stretches about two miles into the sea. Formed by ancient lava flows 15 to 20 million years ago, it is composed of dark basalt, giving the cliffs their rugged, dramatic look.

The headland is blanketed with lush hemlock and Sitka spruce forest, and several hiking trails lead through the trees to viewpoints with breathtaking coastal vistas. On a clear day, you can see as far north as Tillamook Head—42 miles away—and as far south as Cape Foulweather, 39 miles away.

The viewpoints along the cape are also great places to spot migrating whales, sea lions, and many kinds of seabirds.

Cape Lookout Hiking

Trails at Cape Lookout State Park lead to several viewpoints and beaches.

The Cape Lookout Trail is a moderate 4.7-mile out-and-back hike with about 810 feet of elevation gain that leads to the tip of the headland. The path becomes muddy and rough in places, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

The South Trail (also called the Oregon Islands South Trail) is about 3.6 miles round trip and descends to a secluded beach at the base of the cape, with a steep climb on the return.

The Netarts Spit Trail is roughly 10.6 miles round trip and passes along the beach, which can be cut off during high tide.

Cape Lookout State Park is open year-round for both day use and overnight camping. The day-use area includes restrooms and picnic tables, while the campground offers restrooms, hot showers, and an RV dump station. Pets are welcome but must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet.
