Chukar Park Campground is a developed facility managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). It's located along the beautiful North Fork Malheur River, about six miles north of Highway 20 near Juntura, Oregon.

What can you do once you get there? Lots of things. The campground is well-known for fishing, but that's not all. Here are some fun activities to try:

Fishing: The North Fork Malheur River runs right next to the campground and offers excellent trout fishing. I spent hours enjoying the river, catching trout, and relaxing in nature.

Hiking: You can hike along the riverbank or explore the nearby trails. It's a great way to enjoy the high desert scenery.

Wildlife Watching: Birds are everywhere, including the campground's namesake - chukar birds. You might also spot deer, rabbits, or even snakes, so stay alert!

Stargazing: At night, the clear desert skies offer amazing views of stars. Bring a blanket and relax under the stars.

Chukar Park is an excellent spot for those looking to enjoy the many outdoor opportunities at Beulah Reservoir, just nine miles north. This reservoir is popular for fishing and boating, picnicking, relaxing on the shore, and even collecting ancient leaf fossils.

When I visited Beulah Reservoir, the water level was a bit low. Fishing from the shore was still enjoyable, though. Keep in mind that amenities are limited at the reservoir, and the area still needs some improvements to make it more comfortable.

The campground offers a serene environment and good amenities, including:

  • 18 campsites suitable for tents, RVs, or trailers (max RV length 28 feet)
  • Picnic tables and fire rings at each campsite
  • Vault toilets (clean and simple)
  • Potable drinking water (available May through October)
  • Boat ramp for river access.

The campground is open all year, with a small parking fee of $5 per night per vehicle.

If you have the America the Beautiful pass, you'll enjoy a 50% discount, making it only $2.50 per night. Remember, campsites are first come, first served, so get there early.
