Beulah Reservoir Fossil Sites are located about 15 miles from Juntura on the lake's shoreline. The sites features exposed white, chalky hillsides containing well-preserved Miocene-era leaf fossils dating back millions of years.

This remote destination is accessible via a 14-mile gravel road from Highway US-20. While the road is generally suitable for all vehicles, a 4WD is recommended during rainy or snowy conditions.

Upon reaching the dam, you can search two fossil sites—one to the right of the dam and another across it to the left.

The best time to visit is from late spring to early fall when water levels are low, exposing more fossil-bearing layers.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages the reservoir's shoreline, while Malheur County maintains a concrete boat ramp, a gravel parking area, and a vault restroom near the dam.

In addition to fossil collecting, visitors can enjoy boating and fishing on the reservoir. Also, the reservoir has its own hot springs but no soaking opportunities are available.

When searching for fossils, look for rock surfaces with leaf impressions, dark and reddish streaks, or patterns that indicate preserved plant material.

Some rocks naturally break apart, revealing prehistoric imprints, while others may need careful splitting with a rock hammer and chisel.

Leaf fossils are typically well-preserved in fine-grained sedimentary rock, often showcasing intricate plant details. To protect fragile specimens during transportation, wrap them in paper or other packing materials.
