Little Lava Lake Oregon: People relax in camping chairs and stand along the sandy lake shore, with kayaks, coolers, and swim gear, enjoying a sunny day with a forest and a mountain peak in the background.

• Little Lava Lake is one of the smallest and quietest Cascade Mountain lakes

Little Lava Lake is one of the hidden volcanic lakes along the beautiful Cascade Lakes Highway, about 26 miles southwest of Bend, Oregon, in the heart of the Deschutes National Forest. This small lake sits at an elevation of 4,744 feet (1,446 m) and covers 138 acres, with an average depth of 8 feet and a maximum depth of 20 feet.

Did you know? The lake was formed thousands of years ago when lava flows from Mount Bachelor blocked the Deschutes River, trapping water to create both Lava Lake and Little Lava Lake. Solidified black lava rocks still line the shore, making the landscape feel truly volcanic.

If you want a peaceful outdoor spot with great fishing, paddling, swimming, hiking, and camping, you’ll love Little Lava Lake. It’s quieter than neighboring Lava Lake, so you can escape the crowds and enjoy the top Cascade Lakes scenery.

Little Lava Lake Campground, Day-Use & Boating Site

You’ll find the Little Lava Lake Campground right on the lake’s shore. It’s a small, friendly campground that offers:

  • 13 single tent sites (first come, first served)
  • 2 group tent sites
  • Vault toilets
  • Drinking water
  • Boat ramp (for canoes, kayaks, and SUPs. No motorboats allowed)

I love waking up here to birds singing and the smell of pine trees. The campground is simple but has everything you need for a weekend getaway.

If you want more amenities, Lava Lake Campground and Resort is just next door, offering:

  • Cabins, boat rentals, general store
  • Larger campground with more sites
  • Day-use area and swimming beach

Outdoor Activities at Little Lava Lake

Fishing

Trout fishing is the main draw for many visitors to Little Lava Lake. Anglers can catch:

  • Wild brook trout (most 10–12 inches, sometimes up to 17 inches!)
  • Stocked rainbow trout
  • Whitefish
  • Tui chub

Only non-motorized boats are allowed so the water stays calm for paddling and fishing. I’ve caught some of my best trout here in early summer. Don’t forget your Oregon fishing license, and always check local fishing regulations!

Swimming

Swimming at Little Lava Lake is refreshing, especially in July and August when the water warms up. The lake is clear, shallow near the shore, and safe for families.

You’ll find sandy and gravel beach spots, calm, cool water, and picnic tables in the day-use area.

Hiking

You’ll find several great trails around the lake and nearby wilderness. Here are my favorites:

Little Lava Lake Trail

Easy | Follows the shoreline | Great for spotting birds and wildflowers

Williamson Mountain Trail

Moderate | 8 miles (12.8 km) round trip | 1,200 ft (366 m) elevation gain

It heads south from the lake into the Three Sisters Wilderness for mountain views and wildflowers.

Horseback riding is also allowed on some trails.

Tip: Bring bug spray because mosquitoes can be thick in June and July!

Little Lava Lake Camping, Lodging & Vacation Rentals

The Little Lava Lake Campground is perfect for those who want a true camping experience:

  • 13 single tent sites
  • 2 group tent sites
  • Vault toilets
  • Drinking water
  • Boat ramp for easy launching

It’s quiet, simple, and right on the water, just the way I like it. At night, you’ll hear nothing but the wind in the trees and maybe a loon calling.

For more comfort, you can stay at Lava Lake Resort next door with rustic cabins, a marina, and a small store.

Or, if you want even more options, Bend lodging is just 40 minutes away.
