• Lava Lake is popular among anglers, campers, hikers, swimmers, boaters, and paddleboarders

Lava Lake is one of several volcanic lakes located along the scenic Cascade Lakes Highway, about 25 miles southwest of Bend, Oregon in the heart of the Deschutes National Forest.
This natural lake was shaped when lava flow from Mount Bachelor altered the drainage area, trapping water to form both Lava Lake and its neighbor, Little Lava Lake. The black lava rocks and rugged landscape are still visible everywhere. You really feel the volcanic history as you explore the shoreline.
Today, the lake is famous for trout fishing, camping, swimming, hiking, kayaking, and boating. The area is especially busy in summer, but I’ve always found a peaceful spot to enjoy the water and mountain views.
Little Lava Lake is tucked just south of Lava Lake, separated by a dramatic ridge of solidified lava. It’s smaller and quieter, making it great if you want to escape crowds.
Outdoor Activities at Lava Lake
Fishing
Lava Lake is a top spot for trout fishing in Oregon. Anglers can catch rainbow trout (up to 24 inches!), brook trout (up to 19 inches), and tui chub.
Both motorized and non-motorized boats are welcome. Some folks even fish from float tubes or off the dock.
Always check Oregon fishing regulations and bring your license.
Swimming
Swimming at Lava Lake is awesome in summer. The water is crystal clear, surrounded by lodgepole pine and volcanic rock.
You’ll find: sandy and rocky beaches, shallow spots that warm up by July and August, day-use area with a swimming beach and picnic tables. The main beach near the resort is my favorite.
Hiking
The area has multiple trails of various difficulty for you to choose from.
Lava Lake Trail - easy to moderate 3 miles out and back with 100 feet elevation gain. This scenic trail runs along the east side of the lake, perfect for a peaceful walk. You’ll spot wildflowers, birds, and sometimes deer.
Williamson Mountain Trail - Moderate 8 miles round trip with 1,200 ft elevation gain. This trail heads south from Lava Lake into the Three Sisters Wilderness. It is great for mountain views, forest walking, and wildflower spotting.
Tip: Bring bug spray because mosquitoes can get thick in early summer!
Lava Lake Camping and Lodging
Visitors can stay at Lava Lake Resort, with rustic cabins, a marina, a general store, and boat rentals. The resort has a public day-use area and a sunny beach, perfect for relaxing or launching your kayak.
There’s also a large national forest campground right at the lake with 44 campsites for tents, trailers, or RVs. Some sites are tents-only for extra peace and quiet.
If you are looking for more comfortable accommodations, there are plenty of options in Bend.
