Warm Springs Reservoir, located 50 miles east of Burns, is a remote high-desert destination popular among rock collectors. This 4,500-acre reservoir is surrounded by rugged hills and expansive sagebrush-covered landscapes shaped by volcanic activity and erosion over millions of years. The area is rich in fascinating geological treasures waiting to be discovered.
In addition to excellent rockhounding opportunities, the reservoir offers breathtaking scenery and a variety of recreational activities, including fishing, boating, and hiking.
The reservoir is situated south of Highway 20 and can be accessed using two routes: Juntura-Riverside Road on the eastern side or Warm Springs Reservoir Road on the western side. These roads form a 40-mile loop, allowing you to plan your trip to explore multiple sites along the way.
Warm Springs Reservoir Rockhounding
A variety of materials, ranging in size, is scattered across the surface, making it easy to start collecting. Look for "floats" in the sagebrush, dumps, dry washes, and on hillsides. A geology pick can also help pry rocks from the ground.
We made several stops along Warm Springs Reservoir Road, which follows the western side of the lake. Nearly everywhere we searched, a variety of minerals were found, including agate, plume agate, jasper, and petrified wood. By the time we reached Juntura-Riverside Road which begin at the dam, it was nearly dusk, allowing us just two quick stops along last part of the loop. Despite the limited time, we found intriguing pieces of agate and petrified wood.
A few of the locations where we stopped are included in the directions below. However, the landscape changes each year due to water and erosion, forming new dry washes and gulches that reveal treasures hidden for thousands of years.
When traveling along the road, stop at any spot that looks promising—you never know what you might uncover.
