Sunriver, located about 15 miles south of Bend, is a breathtaking 3,300-acre planned community nestled in Deschutes County, Oregon. This high-desert environment at 4,000-foot elevation contributes to the region's sunny weather, crisp mountain air, and stunning views of the nearby Cascade Mountains. Unique Sunriver  History

Sunriver sits on the former grounds of Camp Abbot, a World War II training facility where soldiers prepare for combat. While most of the camp was dismantled by 1944, the Officers' Club was preserved and is now known as the Great Hall.

If you visit the Great Hall today, you can still feel its history. It's a beautiful building used for events, weddings, and gatherings.

Did you know Sunriver's developers chose its name in the late 1960s? The first condominiums were built in 1968, and the area has grown ever since.

Climate: Perfect All Year

Sunriver has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, meaning summers are warm but not too hot. Winters can be snowy, but they're not extreme, making it a great place to visit year-round.

When I visited in the summer, it was in the mid-70s, ideal for biking and hiking.

In winter, Sunriver transforms into a snowy wonderland. You can snowshoe through the forest or cozy up by a fire after a day in the snow.

Local Wildlife and Nature

Sunriver is surrounded by nature, so you're likely to spot wildlife during your visit. Keep an eye out for:

• Deer and elk wandering through the trees.
• Ospreys and bald eagles soaring above the Deschutes River.
• Coyotes and small mammals in the meadows.

The area is also famous for its dark skies. At night, step outside and look up. The stars are so bright you might even see the Milky Way.

Sunriver has over 40 miles of paved bike paths. You can rent a bike and explore the trails surrounded by towering pines. It's peaceful and easy for all skill levels.

Hiking

Sunriver is near the Cascade Mountains, where you'll find incredible hiking trails. You can find short, easy walks, challenging treks, and everything in between.

The Village at Sunriver

This charming shopping area has restaurants, boutiques, and even a seasonal ice skating rink. It's a great spot to grab a coffee, shop for souvenirs, or enjoy family-friendly events.

Sunriver Nature Center and Observatory

This center has hands-on exhibits about local wildlife. At night, visitors can gaze at the stars through powerful telescopes.
