Sport Haven Beach, located at the mouth of the Chetco River in Brookings, combines the best aspects of beach life and city life all in one spot!

This beach stretches almost a mile south from the south jetty. It's made of coarse sand, easy to walk on, and very clean, with plenty of free parking right next to the shore.

Sport Haven can get busy, especially in summer. Also, if you bring your dog along, please keep them under control. This helps protect birds and makes sure everyone has a good time.

This beach is great for rockhounding, fishing, picnicking, surfing, and other activities.

Also, since the Sport Haven is part of Brookings Harbor right next door to the beach you'll find:

  • Locally owned restaurants with delicious seafood.
  • Motels and hotels, including the Best Western Beachfront Inn, just steps from the sand.
  • Shops and fresh seafood markets selling locally caught and canned tuna and salmon.
  • Charter fishing boats at the marina provide fishing trips for salmon, bottom fish, and tuna.

Things to Do at Sport Haven Beach

Rockhounding

The minerals you can find at the beach and gravel bars are similar to the material you can find along the Chetco River. Many of these rocks are transported by the Chetco River from the Upper Chetco River, originating in the Klamath Mountains.

White quartz and jasper are the most common finds here. Occasionally, you can find carnelian agate, petrified wood, and serpentine. Quartz is generally milky-white and sometimes contains mineral impurities. The jasper is large, typically green, brown, and red.

Surfing

Sport Haven Beach is a popular surfing spot. Winter brings huge waves that are great for experienced surfers. At the same time, summer is much calmer and better for beginners.

Fishing

You can catch surfperch right from the beach or fish from the rocks on the jetty for bottomfish, salmon, and tuna.

Walking and Jogging

This beach is perfect for relaxing walks or jogging along the sand.

Bird Watching

You can see shorebirds resting along the shore from late summer through spring.

Southern Oregon Kite Festival

On the third weekend of each July, Sport Haven Beach hosts the Southern Oregon Kite Festival. Most kite flying happens at Harbor Kite Field, just a short walk away. It's a fun event the whole family will enjoy!
