Ziolkouski Beach Park (sometimes spelled Ziolkowski) is located inside Winchester Bay, about 2 miles south of Reedsport on the central Oregon Coast. The beach sits along the Umpqua River channel, just before the river pours into the Pacific Ocean.

Instead of facing the open sea, the park is protected by the Umpqua North and South Jetties - huge structures built from riprap rock to stabilize the inlet and shield the shore.

Because Ziolkouski Beach lies on the bay side, within Salmon Harbor, you’ll notice calmer and safer waters than at most exposed ocean beaches. The jetties act as a natural barrier, making this spot less windy and more peaceful. While you’ll still feel the cool, salty breeze and hear the distant roar of ocean surf, the beach itself is tranquil and easygoing - a classic Oregon estuary.

Ziolkouski Beach Park is open daily, 6 AM to 9 PM, offering lots of daylight for exploring, relaxing, or just sitting and watching the boats drift by.

The unique triangle-shaped area formed by the jetties, combined with the tidal action of the Umpqua River, turns this beach into a natural catchment zone.

As you explore, you may come across large driftwood logs—some sturdy enough to sit on or climb—along with polished stones, small agates, oyster shells, and classic seashells, often linked to nearby aquaculture. After a storm, sea glass and other intriguing debris frequently wash ashore.

Because the beach is sheltered and typically less crowded than open-ocean beaches, it's easy to slow down and explore at your own pace.

Picnicking and Relaxing

The beach is flat and easy to walk on, making it ideal for families, seniors, or anyone seeking a gentle stroll.

A scenic riverside path leads to Halfmoon Bay, a quieter spot just around the bend. Thanks to the jetties blocking strong surf and wind, you can enjoy a peaceful day without the stress of big waves.

Swimming, however, is not recommended. Even in the warmest months, the water temperature remains between 45 and 55°F. While the bay is sheltered and calm, the chilly water is too cold for comfort or safety.

If you're looking for safe, family-friendly swimming, Lake Marie at Umpqua Lighthouse State Park is just 2 miles away and is known for warmer, kid-friendly water.

Eel Lake, Woahink Lake, and Cleawox Lake are all within a 20 to 30-minute drive, offering calm, warmer swimming holes.

Umpqua Lighthouse State Park Campground is just minutes away for those looking to stay overnight. The campground offers 45 full-hookup RV sites, 8 cozy yurts—some of which are pet-friendly—and 10 tent sites nestled among tall, shady trees.

You'll find clean restrooms, hot showers, and easy access to Lake Marie, scenic hiking trails, and the historic Umpqua Lighthouse. It's a peaceful, forested retreat where you can wake to the sound of birds and take a morning stroll to the lake or lighthouse.

Half Moon Bay Campground is located right on the bay, across the jetty from Ziolkouski Beach. This waterfront campground features 54 RV sites, some with hookups, and plenty of space for tents. Restrooms and hot showers are available, and the location offers direct access to the harbor, beach, and the shops and restaurants of Winchester Bay.

You’ll be just steps from the sand, the marina, and some of the best local seafood on the coast.
